Starting Operations Operations - what does this term mean? It refers to operating a model railroad with purpose and in a realistic manner. Instead of just running trains randomly, it gives them a reason to exist. It means that all those freight cars are not just plastic models, but part of a transport system delivering goods from one place to another. Operations is the reason I started this layout and has influenced nearly every element of the design.
To facilitate operations, some system of routeing the cars is needed. There are many different ways of doing this, but I chose the tried and testd Four Cycle Car-Card and Waybill system. This uses a card for each freight car on the layout, which has an accompanying waybill which states the destination (amongst other things) of the car. These are then used to route cars in an operating session.
